The Polyphonic Spree — Rock Symphonic band from another time.
For my first post about music (because I’m sure many more will follow), I have to talk about this band I just discovered thanks to a US TV show. I might be a late bloomer on them but hey, it’s never too late :).
They’re called The Polyphonic Spree, a self-described “choral symphonic band” from Dallas, Texas. They might look like a cult at first sight — but no, they’re just the creation of the (beautiful) crazy mind of Tim DeLaughter, ex-member of the Tripping Daisy. This band is heavily influenced by the experimental rock bands of the 70s, sunny and overwhelmingly happy. They now count about 23 musicians and singers, depending on everybody’s schedule. and those white robes were just introduced to have an consistent image across the musicians, obviously influenced by a theme of happiness and purity. Their costumes rapidly changed to a black tunique.
Here’s the song that made me discover them — they still wear those white robes every time they play this song, probably because it is the one most representative of their spirit.
Polyphonic Spree - Light And Day
Why would I like such a crazy poppy music? First of, because the music is actually not that simple, and very rich. And also because it is crazy — and I love crazy. Plus, they look so happy when they play it ![]()
